How Green is Your Coffee?

How Green is Your Coffee?

There are many advantages to having a coffee machine in your workplace; staff morale, productivity and client satisfaction, to name a few. Choosing organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance beans can go some way to using coffee in a more ethical way, but this is by no means the end of the journey. There are a number of other things you can do that will reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact humans have on the planet.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some ways you can enjoy your cup of coffee without a dash of guilt.

Reduce Plastic Waste

Plastic use has been in the headlines for many years now, and while slow progress is being made by companies to move to more ethical packaging and production methods, plastic still continues to pollute our oceans and impact landfill. According to studies, 16 billion disposable coffee cups are used each year. These cups are usually laminated on the inside and often use plastic lids. That’s not to mention the plastic spoons and stirrers that are also used the world over.

You can make a difference by moving to more sustainable consumables that feature no plastic, such as wooden stirrers that are bio-degradable

Recycle Your Coffee Grounds

Did you know that the waste from coffee machines is one of the most harmful waste products in the world? When coffee grounds go to landfill sites, they can cause the emission of greenhouse gases. But there is a solution. Coffee grounds make fantastic fertilizer. If you have a bean to cup machine, you can arrange for your used coffee grounds to be used as compost. Look online to find initiatives in your local area, or you may even have some green-fingered employees who will be more than happy to take the used grounds home for their own garden!

Encourage Reusable Cups and Flasks

With so many paper cups used each year, one of the best things you can do for your carbon footprint and green credentials is to encourage the use of reusable cups and flasks. Here are just a couple of ways you can do this:

  • Consider ordering branded reusable flasks that can be used by employees on the go and in the office. These will not only give everybody an environmentally friendly and portable way to drink their coffee. They will also advertise your brand both in the office and out.
  • Take a look at some of the innovative reusable products available on the market. Huskee’s range of cups, for example, are made from coffee husks, keep your coffee hotter for longer and are durable and dishwasher safe.
